Risk Assessments & Method Statements – Why Site Specific Matters

We all know the stereotype: subcontractors submit RAMS and the only thing that changes is the site address. But here’s the reality, site-specific RAMS aren’t just paperwork; they’re critical for safety and compliance.
What I Learned
I'm used to managing sub-contractors, not being one. But I have recently fallen on my feet with the best part time role working as a sub-contractor. I have always understood the importance of RAMS, but I made a mistake the first set I asked my consultant for: I gave our health & safety consultant very basic info. The result? Generic RAMS that didn’t reflect the actual risks on site.
How I Fixed It
Now, I’ve completely changed the process:
✅ RAMS Request Form - Includes material weights, detailed method statements, and a 50-point checklist before it even goes to our consultant.
✅ Review Process - Once RAMS are produced, I review them with my own checklist. If amendments are needed, I make them or send them back.
✅ Client-Friendly Review Sheet - I add page, section numbers for quick reference. Project managers are busy, this saves them time and ensures compliance.
✅ Briefing Operatives - A signed RAMS isn’t proof of understanding. Language barriers and rushed briefings mean operatives often don’t fully grasp the risks.
My solution: Digital briefing (Teams) with supervisors, transcribed and documented for compliance. Bombproof from a liability perspective.
The Bigger Issue
People don’t care about RAMS because they see them as paperwork. But if we make them:
Site-specific
Easy to review
Properly communicated
…they become a real safety tool not just a file on SharePoint.
I’m halfway through my SMSTS training, and even the trainer says RAMS are a UK-wide issue. Why? Lack of detail, lack of process, and lack of proof of communication.
✅ If every subcontractor used a structured RAMS request process and proper briefing, we’d all be in a much better position.
